Darker Places is a post-punk/darkwave trio from Whittier, California, creating atmospheric music where storytelling takes center stage. Blending haunting melodies with cinematic arrangements, their songs explore themes of horror, folklore, romance, and the beauty found within melancholy—inviting listeners into immersive worlds that linger long after the music ends.
At the heart of the band's sound is Alex Maciel's unmistakable baritone voice and evocative lyricism, supported by driving basslines, hypnotic rhythms, Rick Marrs' expressive guitar work, and carefully layered synthesizers that add texture rather than distraction. Every element serves the story, resulting in a sound that is both emotionally engaging and distinctly their own.
Since forming in 2019, Darker Places has become an emerging presence within the Southern California dark alternative scene, performing at venues including The Whisky A Go Go and Bar Sinister while sharing the stage with acts such as Fevr, Calaverx, Warsaw Pact, Dark Chisme, and others.
Their music has earned support from DJs and radio hosts across the United States and Europe, including spins on the internationally respected Communion After Dark. Their single Bela's Revenge has found audiences well beyond Southern California, receiving club play throughout the gothic community—including during Wave-Gotik-Treffen week in Leipzig, Germany—helping introduce Darker Places to listeners on both sides of the Atlantic.
With each release, Darker Places continues to build a body of work that values atmosphere, emotion, and narrative over trends, creating songs that reward repeated listening and invite audiences to lose themselves in the journey.

Not built for the crowd. He moves through frequencies like questions through dark air—restless, curious, precise. A lone architect of echo and pulse. He programs the silence between the screams.
Alux is the atmosphere architect, influenced by Tom Furse (The Horrors), Chris Corner (IAMX), and Luis Vasquez (The Soft Moon). Through modulated vocals, dusty synths, and warped textures, he gives the band its ghostly glow.
Ink and shadows carve the path. Hymns for the haunted. A bassline like a pulse beneath the graveyard dirt. Words stitched from nightmares. The heartbeat of the sound, the weight of the words. A voice from the void. He’s kept the flame lit in silence and storm—fueled by love, haunted by purpose. This is his creation, and it lives because he willed it to.
Alex channels the stoic charisma of Jim Morrison and Dave Gahan, weaving deep, spellbound vocals with Peter Hook-style basslines that carry both rhythm and melody.
Strings learned in the chaos, melodies born in the static. A child played for ghosts and drunks, now a man plays for echoes and shadows. Twenty-one chords for a memory, six strings for the soul. Recording ghosts onto tape, chasing frequencies in a room too small for sound. A lifetime for the noise and a heart that never forgets.
Rick draws on Johnny Marr’s textured layering and Lennon’s emotive edge—his guitar work weaves between cinematic shimmer and angular post-punk rhythms.
"Static Hour” opens with an eerie sci-fi atmosphere before driving into a fast-moving darkwave/post-punk pulse of arpeggiated synths, dance-driven drums, reverb claps, and angular guitars. "The lyrics were born after I visited Salem, Massachusetts. Walking through the town, hearing the stories, seeing the graves, and standing where those events took place inspired me to write from the perspective of a woman whose voice had been lost to history. I wanted to bring a voice from the past into the present because women continue to face many of the same hardships today.
I sat on the lyrics for quite a while. Then one morning I woke up with the bassline in my head and knew I had to record it before I forgot it. Once that bassline was there, the rest of the song finally came together."

"As soon as Darker Places sent us the demo-version of Salem, we knew it was going to be a poignant song and meaningful collaboration. We are grateful for DP for thinking of us and giving us this opportunity. The song speaks to the persecution of women during the Salem Witch Trials, but in our mind it also doubles as a metaphor for the opression of women throughout time, which of course is an ongoing issue that we care deeply about."
